Cutdown Weekend 🏈
Rosters have to hit 53 by Sunday afternoon, and preseason Week 3 wraps up this weekend — four games Thursday, ten Friday, two more Saturday. Roughly 1,184 players across the league will lose their jobs before the deadline. Here's what actually matters.
The Story of the Week
Roster cutdown day is Sunday, August 30. Teams have been trimming all week, and a couple of moves already matter for fantasy. The Browns released WR Cedric Tillman (a 2023 third-rounder, 71 catches for 833 yards and 5 TDs over three seasons) after spending this year's first and second-round picks on KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston — a clear signal Cleveland is fully committed to its rookie receiver room heading into 2026.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, waived RB Trey Benson with a knee injury. That clears even more of a runway for Tyler Allgeier as Arizona's Week 1 starter — still criminally underrostered if you've been sitting on him since Issue #2.
Fantasy Corner
Tyler Warren (TE, IND) — dealing with an adductor strain and could return as soon as next week. The Colts plan to be cautious, but this doesn't sound like a real threat to his Week 1 status. Still a top-tier TE target.
DK Metcalf (WR, PIT) — agreed to a restructured contract with the Steelers, a signal of continued investment in his role heading into the season.
Cutdown-day wire watch — keep an eye on waiver claims over the next 48 hours. Talented players get cut for roster-composition reasons every year, and the ones who land on a depth chart with real opportunity are worth an early add.
Quick Hits
Patrick Mahomes (knee) hasn't missed a practice at camp; Andy Reid hasn't confirmed Week 1 snaps, but everything points toward him being ready.
Malik Nabers (knee) is on track for Week 1, with worst-case scenarios limited to missing a game or two if there's a setback.
Ashton Jeanty's (ankle) Week 1 status is now genuinely in doubt — Mike Washington Jr. is worth rostering as more than just a handcuff if you have Jeanty.
Chuba Hubbard (hamstring) is considered week-to-week, but Carolina's coaching staff is confident he'll be ready for the Week 1 opener against Chicago on Sept. 13.
