Cutdown Countdown 🏈

Rosters have to be down to 53 by Sunday, and depth charts are already shifting before the cuts even hit. Here's what actually matters heading into Tuesday.

The Story of the Week

Roster cutdown day is Sunday, August 30, at 6:00 p.m. ET (5:00 p.m. CT). Every team trims to the regular-season limit, and the waiver wire usually gets its first real action of the year in the 24-48 hours around it. If you're holding bench depth on a bubble player, this is the week that decides whether they make a 53-man roster at all.

The bigger news: Texans WR Jayden Higgins tore his ACL in a joint practice and is out for the season. He'd caught 41 passes for 525 yards and 6 touchdowns as a rookie, with his target share climbing down the stretch. Houston responded Monday by trading for WR Kayshon Boutte (33 catches, 551 yards, 6 TDs last season) from the Patriots, sending back a safety and a 2028 seventh-round pick. Boutte now projects as a real Week 1 starter alongside Nico Collins. Tank Dell is making steady progress back from his knee surgeries, but his return timeline is still TBD — Jaylin Noel and TE Dalton Schultz remain in the mix for target share behind Boutte.

Also confirmed this week: the Browns have named Deshaun Watson their Week 1 starter over Shedeur Sanders, with head coach Todd Monken saying Watson "gave us the best chance to move the ball and score points" ahead of Cleveland's Sept. 13 opener against Jacksonville. That's a real swing factor for the receiving corps behind him — Jerry Jeudy holds the WR1 role but is coming off a down 2025 (50 catches, 602 yards) amid Cleveland's QB chaos, while rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston sit behind him at WR2/WR3. Any QB stability at all could unlock real upside for this group — worth tracking all season.

Fantasy Corner

  • Tyler Allgeier (RB, ARI) — projected Week 1 starter for Arizona and rostered in under 20% of ESPN leagues. That gap won't last.

  • KC Concepcion (WR, CLE) — the rookie played with the 1s in the preseason opener: 3 catches for 27 yards plus a rushing touchdown. Worth a priority waiver claim if he's still available.

  • Tre Tucker (WR, LV) — locked into the Z role for the Raiders and looking like the clear top receiver in that room.

Quick Hits

  • Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty left practice early after landing awkwardly on a diving catch attempt and couldn't put weight on his leg — the scare turned out to be a sprained ankle, not considered long-term. He'll likely miss Week 1 with a possible return by early October. Rookie Mike Washington Jr. (4th-round pick, 4.33 speed) steps into the starting role in the meantime; he's a top-tier handcuff but not yet a standalone flex play unless Jeanty's absence stretches on.

  • Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard is dealing with a hamstring issue and considered week-to-week — worth monitoring if you rostered him as a lead back.

  • Ricky Pearsall (49ers) is out for the season after PCL surgery — San Francisco responded by signing Deebo Samuel Sr. to line up alongside Mike Evans.

  • Luther Burden III (groin) and Jeremiyah Love (high ankle sprain) are both considered hopeful for Week 1.

  • Jaylen Warren (adductor strain) could return as soon as next week.

  • Patrick Mahomes says his knee "feels great" but hasn't been cleared for preseason snaps; Christian McCaffrey returned to practice Sunday after his usual planned camp break.
